The Australian Spelling Championship (Ozspell)

BRIEF: Running a successful televised national spelling competition for tens of thousands of Australian school students, aged 10 to 14, requires a substantial amount of organisation. The staff at Ozspell needed a system to assist with the tracking of competitors throughout the competition.

SOLUTION: A custom FileMaker Pro system was developed with a native interface and web interface. The database system provides a method to track initial school registrations, then link students to their schools and track students throughout the competition. Data is entered into the system by administrative staff via the database interface, or by schools or competitors via the web interface. Reports are generated at regular intervals throughout the year and important announcements are posted dynamically on the web site or sent by email or fax, as required. The grand finale is an online scoring system for the national final, to enable viewing of results in real time.
